The Benefits Of Sealing Concrete
The principal benefit of sealing concrete is that it will greatly expand the lifespan of the surface. The resins contained in the sealer form a protective shell, thus reducing the likelihood of cracking and spalling. In addition, the sealer will enhance the appearance of your concrete by adding an attractive gloss, and protecting against discoloration and staining.
Three Different Types Of Concrete Sealers
The most commonly available type of concrete sealer consists of an acrylic resin base. These sealers offer the best compromise between protection and price. They are often blended with other sealing agents such as epoxy, silicone, or polyurethane, in order to enhance either water resistance or durability.
Be aware, however, that all acrylic based resins are not the same. In general, you should avoid choosing a styrene acrylic sealer. Though inexpensive, and easily found at a variety of home improvement stores, this type of acrylic resin often leads to an unattractive yellowish appearance, and may break down when exposed directly to sunlight. Instead, opt for a pure acrylic resin.
There are also a variety of epoxies and polyurethane sealers available today. These, for the most part, should be avoided. Not only are they often considerably more expensive than acrylic resins, but they tend to result in a more slippery surface. Furthermore, such sealers don't permit moisture to adequately move out of the concrete. This can lead to unsightly whitish patches developing between the concrete and the sealer.
The Concrete Sealer Application Process
Concrete sealer is generally applied using either a sprayer or a roller. Choosing the most effective method has a lot to do with the particular type of sealer being applied. Thus you should always defer to the application guidelines suggested by the manufacturer.
In general, those sealers which are solved based should be applied using a spray gun. This helps reduce the risk of accidental over application, which can in turn lead to unsightly surface films. Water based sealers, on the other hand, are best applied with a roller.Share
